Cosmic Symphony explores the sonic world of traditional western music and its musical instruments, paired in composition with instruments of metaverse and newly created musical instruments and musical language designed through research by composer and sound artist Mehmet Unal. These newly created instruments and sounds they produce were developed following the research of spectral lines, in physics, and most specifically in the change in energy levels of atoms. From Mehmet’s research and NASA’s spectrography study (included via link below), Mehmet developed a new musical language and scale system based on light waves and how they change unique to each atom. Mehmet has created a unique sonic landscape paired with visual experience where he brings the sound of stars and the sound of space to the stage.
The project’s performance includes pre-concert experiences including Interactive lobby exhibits exploring atoms and the sound of space, an interactive application that the audience can download and participate with during the show, and a “curious universe” podcast the concert goers can listen to before or after the performance.
The stage performance includes a multidimensional audio and visual experience including a beautifully composed score of traditional composition for strings, brass and percussion, and a metaverse instrument performed by Unal while wearing an oculus, that the audience can view on screen. Through scientific partners, images collected from the Hubble Space Telescope have been made available to the project and are projected on screen enhancing the concert goers visual experience of the exploration of Unal’s score, new musical instruments and new musical language.
This story and experience of Cosmic Symphony, however, is not new, it is a story of us – we are not a part of the universe, we are the universe, and this is our story – we are all made up of atoms and exist within the quantum state.
This is a concert experience for the young, the young at heart, and those fascinated by worlds beyond our realm.
