Cosmic Symphony is an immersive orchestral work by Turkish composer, inventor, and new media artist Mehmet Ünal, built on a simple premise: the light of the universe can be made audible. Every element in existence — hydrogen, helium, iron, carbon — emits light at frequencies unique to it, a spectral fingerprint astronomers use to read the composition of distant stars. Ünal has developed an original tuning and scale system that translates these atomic emission spectra into audible frequencies, allowing him to compose not with metaphors for the cosmos but with its actual material. The score is performed by a full symphony orchestra alongside a family of original digital instruments designed and built by the composer, and is synchronized with large-scale projection and light design drawn from the same spectral data that generates the music. The result is a single continuous journey — from the first radiation of the early universe through the forging of elements in stars to the emergence of life — in which what the audience sees and what they hear are two expressions of the same physical phenomenon.
Cosmic Symphony premiered in 2026 with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra in Ankara. It follows Ünal’s Beyond the Light, created in collaboration with NASA and ARTECHOUSE, an award-winning immersive experience that brought data from the James Webb and Hubble telescopes to audiences in Washington, D.C. and New York. The production is designed to travel and to be realized with a host orchestra: the composer and his technical team bring the digital instruments, visual content, and scale system, while the orchestral parts are performed by the presenting ensemble. Running approximately 60 minutes without intermission, it is suited to concert halls, planetariums and domes, and architecturally distinctive or large-format venues, and can be scaled to the presenter’s stage, projection capability, and orchestral forces.
